Its okay… to go back to basics

For Christmas 2014, my mum bought me a Beginners Weekend course at Ashbourne Cookery School. To say I was underwhelmed was an understatement. I CAN cook Mother was my first thought. My second thought was ‘where the hell is Ashbourne?’

And my third thought was to google it. Didn’t look to bad actually.

My Mum had decided to send me on a course because having moved into my first flat with my boyfriend 6 months earlier, I had been gifted with something I had never had before; a kitchen. Not one with Mum in the middle of it and siblings/dogs/cats/dad running round the cooker. Not one with four other housemates all trying to make their tea!

Nope, for the first time I had my own kitchen and whilst I couldn’t wait to get started… I had to admit that I was actually a really bad cook.

For one thing- I can’t make jelly. Ask anyone who knows me.

You’re doomed if you can’t make jelly.

Don’t get me wrong. I was a very enthusiastic cook but it was like my brief history with Netball in Year 9; a fat but keen voluntary sub who spent the whole time on the bench because I kept dropping the ball. I also have absolutely no patience so recipe books, instructions, manuals could all go to hell!

But I just about go by. I bought the essentials in Ikea (See my post on essentials here) and my boyfriend was encouraging… if not slightly worried about food poisoning.

I was excited about Ashbourne but in all honesty I thought I would get a bit bored by lunch time.

How wrong I would be….

I won’t go into the major detail of my experience, what I made (a banging roast pork loin) or the hilarious incidents that ensued (A recently divorced lawyer put a plastic tray in the oven and nearly gassed us all!) but what I will say is this… if you want to improve your cooking, you get yourself on a course for godsake. My Mum (bless her) has taught me a lot of basics over the years (we make mean gravy) but I can shout back at my Mum. Sometimes, it’s not a bad thing to go back to school.

I did the ‘Beginners Cookery Weekend’
